General fiction for adult readers is a National Book Award category that has been continuous since 1950, with multiple awards for a few years beginning 1980. Established in 1950, the National Book Awards are American literary prizes administered by the National Book Foundation, a nonprofit organization. On Tuesday the National Book Foundation unveiled the finalists for the 2019 National Book Awards.
