The tower has 47 floors and is 168.87 metres (554 ft) in height, making it the tallest building in the United Kingdom outside London, and the tallest building in Manchester, until it was surpassed by Deansgate Square. The Beetham Tower was designed by Ian Simpson of the Beetham Organisation. Construction was due to begin in July / August 2008 with an expected completion date in 2011. The tower has been planned for the junction of Blackfriars Road and Stamford Street on the south bank.
