My perception of the city was probably skewed by two things: With that in mind, the city was interesting to see, though I didn’t pick up on any sort of a vibe. I’ve never seen something like that before and I don’t even know how to describe them properly! The Rixos brand is associated with luxury and opulence. I truly thought craft beer would be on the rise in Almaty, but it never really ‘happened’. starting to feel like you lucky. Travelling from Bishkek to Almaty we didn’t have a lot of time so simply took a taxi from the inner city to the border which only cost us about 3-4 Euros each. No matter how hard Kazakhstan tries to make Astana happen as a cultural hub, Almaty is where it’s at. I'm working full time and balancing my job with extensive travels all over the world. It is pretty safe there, but mishaps happen and because Kazakhstan is a mammoth of a country, you will want to ensure you never end up without adequate medical coverage. The only one that was likely to take place was Charyn Canyon but it was canceled too due to the lack of people (the price was 13€ for the whole day!). Basically, just know your destination and what you’re willing to pay and step to the side of the street, raise your arm, and someone will stop and ask you where you’re going. Hey, I’m going to travwl through Kazakhstan too but I’m really concerned about taking the long train trips as there are only the 4 bed compartments left. In Almaty, it’s not difficult to spot these details and even the most random concrete structure can look special. And again everything was at very reasonable prices! But is it also possible to have trekking on your own? Just outside Almaty, you can find Hunn village – the etno center showing the culture and traditions of Kazakh. It definitely is worth a visit! There is SO much to do in Almaty and its vicinity that I never understood why people don’t spend more time in the city and region.
