I love the theory of Lenny Bruce. Dustin Hoffman (Rain Man) magnificently captures the complexities and contradictions of the legendary comedian Lenny Bruce's mercurial character. He hadn't become obsessed with it in order to further subvert it. My knowledge of Lenny before watching this was only average and not expecting much the film surpassed my expectations. The main reason is for the 188-page booklet that is part of the deal, chock full of photos from the careers of Fosse, Hoffman and Valerie Perrine up until 1974. 3 1/2 stars. Not the real Lenny Bruce...but a great represention. Here, Bruce is not merely a troubled family man but a self-avenger whose stability and judgment (never one of Bruce's more active traits) went spiraling. Or maybe it's that Weide allows the facts and Bruce's material to speak for themselves. He grew up a few miles from me, I'm not proud to say, then again, I'm proud to say, for his attempt to open up free speech. What Bob Fosse’s 1974 biopic of taboo-breaking stand-up comedian Lenny Bruce may lack in terms of cinematic innovation, it makes up for as an important social statement of the times (essentially, the 1960s). I was watching "The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel" and saw him as a recurring character. Dustin Hoffman is a very good Actor and he tell the story about Lenny Bruce in a brilliant way. Assuming I am speaking to people who actually like this Bob Fosse-directed biography of shock-comic Lenny Bruce (such as myself), and find Dustin Hoffman's impersonation acceptable, those who missed out on the now OOP Twilight Time Blu-ray release have this option. But for the men dogging Bruce, Hef was never the offensive critic Bruce was. To be sure, Lenny's brilliance and desperation are on full display, but the routine is less comedic and more a polemical declaration of free speech. His biography by Goldman does a complete dive into Bruce's life including discussing all of his famous bits in detail giving great context as to why they were funny at the time. Weide suggests that Bruce, once speaking his mind became a challenge, decided to contort his image, chilling with Hugh Hefner at the Playboy mansion. Rather, he wanted to understand why and how it was raping him, forcibly entering his art and shutting it down. Lenny was a disrupter, an original, and literally set the stage for those who came after (Richard Prior, George Carlin). It really put you into the moments which even though maybe distasteful at times were done very real and let the viewers open the screen and climb inside the story. Dustin Hoffman’s portrayal as Bruce was (rightly, IMO) nominated for the best actor Oscar and his cheeky chappie turned passionate social commentator (and thence, 'attorney’ for his own defence) is never more effective than when he is ridiculing the judiciary (to the amusement of onlookers) during the film’s later court-room sequences. The film exists as an incensing time capsule of an era when the cops would haunt a nightclub's exit doors to lock a guy up for having a big, critical mouth. The black and white photography is breathtaking. The ending seemed rather abrupt but otherwise a solid biopic. Video availability outside of United States varies. Great directing and great acting.
