We get to see a few episodes of her life, how she starts out with an abusive and jealous boyfriend and how she manages to leave him for Jack, a criminal that offers stability. The whole scene seems surreal, sending subtle signals: maybe the story in the movie is just symbolic, like in a medieval morality. and there were, of course, certain moments that carry the signature techniques of Wong Kar Wai - techniques that were certainly not signature of Hou Hsiao-Hsien: slow-mo, slow-shutter-speed/losing frames, not to mention the ultimate WKW stamp of signature - the head-leaning-on-shoulder-in-a-car-quite-melancholically-but-not-necesarily-romantically-but-just-kinda-ambiguously-amorously. about Shu Qi, she gives a wonderful performance, in perfect resonance with the She appears to us at the beginning at the film, walking in a very long corridor, in a slow motion and on pop music. It's a very good movie although fascination is something very personal. But, it is a different form of expressing a history, more similar to how we, in real life, observe the life of other people. This scene haunts me to the present day (and I've seen the film in 2001) and is in my opinion just visually/technically stunning.
