Humorist and Author Jack Handey provides a tongue-in-cheek take on travel and leisure writing, and with that sentiment, read for merely sheer pleasure with the least seriousness. Eventually the two men stumble across an old treasure map and decide to search for the Golden Monkey, heading up the Paloonga River into the dangerous tropical wilderness, guided by the beautiful Leilani. I sat down in the library, started reading, and about five pages later just had to leave, because I was on the verge of losing it. File: EPUB, 416 KB. Please try your request again later. Ceaselessly seeking out non-fiction writing on almost any topic, Dave can carry almost forty pounds of books in the pannier pack on his bicycle and knows all the librarians at his local public library by their first names. It is shockingly bad and unfunny. There was a problem loading your book clubs. Unfortunately, our amusingly incompetent narrator finds it hard to make ends meet, struggles to find work and finally decides to join the Hawaiian Army, although he changes his mind at the last minute. Every "fact" is made up, including everything about Hawaii and Honolulu. I can confidently give it four stars for fans of Handey’s oeuvre. Erroneously assumed by many to be an SNL fabrication or pseudonym, the man has made a career out of his brief, bizarre, ironic and often hilarious commentary. The Stench of Honolulu: A Tropical Adventure is one of those unique books that must be taken with a grain of salt. The story is quite funny at times, but there isn’t much to it and it really appears that Handey has cobbled together this ridiculously flimsy tropical plot to serve mainly as a scaffold for a lengthy string of his trademark one-liners. I laughed out loud on every page. ‎ The legendary Deep Thoughts and New Yorker humorist Jack Handey is back with his very first novel-a hilarious, absurd, far-flung adventure tale. Invited on a trip to the tropics by his friend Don, our unnamed protagonist ends up in a “dirty coastal backwater called Honolulu”, which turns out to stink to high heaven due to the foul remains of its once thriving fish industry as well as the presence of the Golden Stink Bomb Factory and an unfortunate infestation of belchwood trees. His writing for Saturday Night Live is known worldwide. I bought this book on the very strong recommendation of the Absolute Radio presenter Christian O'Connell, who one morning on his show was saying how much he loved it, that it was one of his favourite books, that he reads it again each year, and that this is the book he gifts to people because it is that funny. Save my name, email, and website in this browser for the next time I comment. Not much for a novel, but for a one-liner, way long. Jack Handey is the funniest writer in America. The image on the cover of the book speaks for itself of the hula girl dashboard and to follow that, thoughts of the Tiki Bar of cocktails with miniature parasols. Upon their arrival, they stop to admire an impressive bronze statue of Sir Edmund Honolulu III – the discoverer of Hawaii – and proceed to make themselves at home despite the stench. I am amazed that such a terrible book was ever published. Prostitutes wrestle in the streets. Treasure map in hand, the travelers venture upriver in quest of the fabled Golden Monkey, guided by the sexpot Leilani, who is also a master mechanic.
