Just don't forget the wine. The story - someone pursues an unusual profession to the chagrin of their family - is familiar. That opening is followed by an equally endearing scene, in which Elijah spots a new customer, Tanya (Sasha Compère), and guides the inexperienced but curious drinker towards something that would align with her taste in hip-hop. A film with a smile and a tear. The storyline is familiar to all (protagonist wants a different style of life than his/her parents and faces hardship because of it) but the sommelier and wine aspect brought a tiny little twist to it. "Uncorked" pours an old, old wine into an unexpected new bottle, and while the results are hardly vintage, it still goes down better than two-buck chuck.

The idea that certain things are deemed inaccessible to or not “for” those of lower- or middle-class backgrounds is handled delicately, and one of the best things about Penny’s script. What I really appreciate it about this movie was that it was towed from a Black perspective it wasn't the typical black story so to speak. 'Uncorked': Film Review. Its fiction.
In the days where we’re all cooped up at home, there are certainly worse things you could do than settling in front of this pleasant film and its upbeat musical tracks (original music by Hit Boy) with a positive attitude and a smooth bottle of wine. I feel a lot of affection for Memphis' culture and characters, which are the background in many ways. No, that's a Somalian. In his good-natured feature debut “Uncorked,” writer/director Prentice Penny (“Insecure,” “Brooklyn Nine-Nine”) sets out to challenge and change these optics, braiding a formulaic father-and-son tale with a gifted African-American sommelier-to-be’s pursuit of his advanced palate.
It's the kind of movie anyone can easily curl up with, without too much thought. The film isn't without its flaws, but they're all forgivable in light of how well it hits the feel-good bullseye. Perhaps it'll even expand how you view it, depending on how you like the unresolved ending.

The third act focuses heavily on how Louis and Elijah finally come to terms with their differences, while recognising the similar roads they had to travel. It's sweet, medium-bodied, and unchallenging.

A major personal upheaval colors the second half of the film, which finds Elijah more actively struggling with his responsibility to his family and the knowledge that, maybe, the barbecue restaurant wasn’t exactly his father’s passion, either. The film’s vigorous (and by all means, mouth-watering) opening sequence economically represents the world in which he dwells through a bit of slick editing—on one hand, there is the BBQ joint ran by his father, Louis (a coolly authoritative Courtney B. Vance), and on the other, there are the velvety pours Elijah sells and studies with enthusiasm while dreaming of becoming a master sommelier one day. That's not to say that it wasn't a good movie because it was I could just see that being the one critique of the film. Verified reviews are considered more trustworthy by fellow moviegoers. The richness and texture of smoked ribs is countered with the richness of a full bodied merlot. In Uncorked, we see a third-generation family business, a woman with a collection of wigs due to her chemotherapy, a black woman who despite being the daughter of a restaurant owner and chef, not only can't cook, but may as well put raisins in potato salad if she hasn't already, and a black family that raised just under four grand to fund a school semester in Paris. He faces the usual reservations from his restauranteur father (Courtney B. Vance) - who yearns for him to follow in his footsteps at his rib-joint. The film, an introspective piece of arthouse fiction, opens with a juxtaposition between a black family restaurant and a winery – two contrasting, very different worlds.

Despite his father's wishes for him to carry on the family restaurant business of smoked ribs and soul food, the main protagonist, Elijah (Mamoudou Athie), decides to enter the world of wine, preparing to become a sommelier. I live in France so can understand the obsession some have with wine.
Perhaps it'll even expand how you view it, depending on how you like the unresolved ending.
Two supporting characters—Matt McGorry’s initially arrogant but ultimately well-meaning “Harvard” (because, well, he went to Harvard, as he often brags about) and Gil Ozeri’s adorably awkward, often insecure Richie—furnish the film with much welcome notes of comedy. As the movie progresses, Elijah becomes more alive through the art of wine – enthusiastic, uncorking his personality.
