Based on a novel by Michael Chabron, the film is set in a university over the course of a week-end long writing festival. After complaints from Ladd's family, Paramount removed the offending line in all future releases of the film, including home video. Most of the cast were announced during the press conference, although the role of Richard's father, which would be taken up by Gerald Chew, was not yet cast. Mix in drugs, an unregistered firearm, a transvestite, some vintage cultural Americana, a bedraggled pink bathrobe, and a soundtrack featuring Bob Dylan, John Lennon, Neil Young, and Leonard Cohen and a movie just doesn't get much more delicious than this.
