It wasn't quite enough to save the film for me, but all did a great job. Often an unregulated activity of opportunity in coastal communities, wrecking has been subjected to increasing regulation and evolved into what is now known as marine salvage.. Wrecking is no longer economically significant. We all are, a little, you know. The reason for this double standard is that while some traits are considered to be more fundamental to a person than others, which traits are considered fundamental is largely socially constructed. However, Hood not only makes it quite clear that the child is not David’s, she also suggests that David knows that the boy is not his but he is content to live the lie because living that lie is more pleasant than living through an honest divorce. Per press notes, Hood claims to have grown up in an English village similar to the sleepy Fens hamlet depicted here, and her film is clearly posited as a contempo take on a grand British tradition of rustic what-lies-beneath storytelling, dating back to radio soap “The Archers” and beyond. It felt as if half the movie consisted of shots of the actors staring 'meaningfully' at each other, and the other half was shots of trees and leaves. As David, Dawn and their son walk towards the camera and the credits begin to roll, we can reflect upon the words of Polonius: This maxim relies upon the assumption that honesty is always the best policy but what of those times when self-deception results in a happier and more enjoyable life than one lived in the shadow of oppressive truth? As Dawn’s arc suggests, we like the idea that we must be perpetually honest with ourselves because we like the idea that there is a real self to which we can be true. The first half of the movie was slow, and while the second half picked up a bit, it wasn't enough to save the film. Perhaps telling the tale from the perspective of the relatively normal wife is the error here, but although the subject material is highly emotive, I struggled to connect with the story at an emotional level. ...it really would have helped a lot to know just a bit more.. not for getting Clair Foy and Shawn Evans. However, if we internalise the fiction then our skill at lying simply ceases to factor into the equation. This film is far from perfect, it suffers from a visibly low budget (the version I watched had such bad audio quality I could hardly make out what they were saying most of the time) and maybe being a tad too subtle for its own good. Why should we remain honest with ourselves at all times? The film captures the awkwardness of human interaction well, but struggles a bit on motivations: the inside of the husband's mind remains closed to us, and a pair of unlikely sexual encounters each just happen. However, I do agree with Lolly that you should have placed a spoiler warning just in case people were not looking for what I was. Nick’s past is troubled not only by virtue of the horrible things he saw in Afghanistan but also by virtue of the brutal upbringing he shared with David in the village where the couple now reside. Benedict Cumberbatch will be taking the world by storm! Those who, like us, are always hungering for fresh Cumberbatch might want to give this one a look. Another brilliant performance by Benedict Cumberbatch, A dollop or two of Cumberbatch to tide you over, Interesting Premise Becomes Muddled About halfway through. Hood initially presents the distance between Dawn and Nick as entirely social, but the longer Nick stays with the couple, the more we learn about his troubled past. But having watched it for the second time, I've stopped seeing the lack of answers and clear plot points as a flaw, it's most likely an integral part of the director's vision. Well acted and tightly written, this movie is strangely simple and plain - and captivating. Based on this analysis, the evolutionary psychologist Robert Trivers has argued that a capacity for self-deception can be a real evolutionary advantage. Add a Review. It isn’t a thriller and really isn’t about plot so I don’t think that it can be spoiled. The trailer made is seem like a deep, captivating film, but in the end, it tried too hard. Post was not sent - check your email addresses! Hood handles Dawn’s sense of social slippage with admirable grace by having David turn up and embrace Nick with a passion that he never once displays towards her. We need these things because to do without them is to wind up like Nick, honest but crushed by the sheer weight of historical horror. Why does the only user review of Wreckers on IMDb so far look as though it has been written by Benedict Cumberbatch's mother? Indeed, if we are trying to convince someone of something we know to be false then our capacity to mislead them is largely a question of skill; we need to be able to minimalise physical tells, keep stories straight in our heads and know when to play down certain elements of the story lest our interlocutor realise that we are trying too hard to convince them. very well played by Benedict Cumberbatch! © Copyright 2020 Variety Media, LLC, a subsidiary of Penske Business Media, LLC. Brooding disquiet as tensions bubble up in Dictynna Hood's sure-footed debut, the story of a fraught return to the rural The film ends with Dawn and David happily re-united thanks to the birth of a son. Consumed by the fear that David may not be the man she married, Dawn becomes increasingly obsessed with getting pregnant. 8 thumbs up! When he came into my life while i watched the movie "Third Star" WOW what a film! I only decided to watch this because Benedict Cumberbatch was in it! By allowing the social distance between Dawn and Nick to transition into a distance measured in terms of sanity, Hood raises interesting questions about the role of class in determining a person’s true nature. Bojangles’ Songwriter, Dead at 78, Design Maven Ron Woodson on How to Arrange Your Furniture Without Overwhelming Your Space, Smaller Conferences Ready for Basketball With Limited Testing Resources, The Firm, Weird, Oddly Popular Sleep Solution That is the Buckwheat Pillow. Our willingness to champion working-class-lads-done-good while feeling distinctly uncomfortable around psychopathic-lads-done-good reveals a double standard surrounding what does and does not constitute an acceptable attempt at re-invention. A quiet, peaceful, slow paced yet interesting drama which portrayed the bittersweetness of life beautifully and made me cry, disgusted and relaxed throughout. It has potential but just misses the mark with so many unanswered questions. Benedict Cumberbatch, i only just joined his many followers within the past months. However, the truth of the matter is that on both a pragmatic and a philosophical level, we deceive ourselves because there is no fundamental truth about who we are. However, having raised all of these questions, the film concludes by presenting us with a happily married couple. ..contains spoilers... the most important scene in the film involves her on her back giving in to a character in the film of which the audience learns very little.. yea, she really loves her husband and she desperately wants a kid.. so, she gets a bit p-o'd at him for not divulging he'd been firing blanks with a previous love interest, and ten seconds later she's on the floorboards heels-up with Gary from 'her-past'.... ...seriously, a few more minutes re-writing, making more sense of this, and it would have come off a much better production.. it's not like they didn't have the screen time available... and Foy is special.. a joy to watch.. stay tuned, she is going to continue to do lots of great things.. So, this starts out interestingly enough: The wayward, troubled veteran brother comes back home for a visit and threatens normal, stable brother's happy marriage. Thank you, that was a very good analysis and summary; exactly what I was looking for in order to know if I should watch the film. Much of the plot of Wreckers hinges upon the question of whether or not Dawn and David’s marriage is based upon a lie. Luckily the film lasted ca 1 hour 20 minutes only. There is no secret to our inner lives; there is only self-deception, convenient fiction and palliative myth. BC fans not fond of arty, impressionistic films should prob'ly stay away. Working together, Hood and Cumberbatch create a final act that constitutes an absolute master class in ambiguous characterisation as one can quite comfortably interpret David both as a normal person struggling to cope with a disturbed relative and as a barely-controlled psychopath who will stop at nothing to defend his hard-won middle-class lifestyle. I am a Cumberbatch fan and I think he's done a perfect job doing the justice to the character. This movie does not straight up tell you the dark truths that are being hinted at. Though living with Nick provides its own unique set of challenges, the real source of the disruption are the questions posed by the differences between David and his brother. Did you write massive plot spoiler anywhere? Thus, honesty with one-self was simply a means to the end of greater honesty with other people. The couple are happily married because they did not seek answers to these questions and because they decided to build a life on a convenient lie. or maybe one of those tales of depraved country life that are satirized in "Cold Comfort Farm." It got to the point where the meaningful stares became humorous in their regularity. The love evident in the brothers’ embrace suggests a dam bursting, as though David has suddenly allowed his true self to surface. His minor lie to a fertility doctor takes the couple to the brink of divorce because that lie suddenly becomes a focus for Dawn’s concern about all the other lies David may or may not be telling both her and himself.
